February and March have seen the beginning of tournament season for Bribie Island members. Our members have not only played competition on the Bribie lawns but have also joined in the events held by the Toowoomba / Darling Downs clubs, entered the Sunshine Coast region's annual tournament as well as played competition at Windsor, Wynnum, Ipswich, Cairnlea in Melbourne and in the NSW Women's Singles in Sydney.
Bribie's first Golf Gala Day for 2026 attracted 18 players from Point Lookout Club, Caloundra, Ipswich, Eildon, Windsor, East Brisbane, Windsor and Wynnum clubs with 14 Bribie players making up the remainder of entrants. One of the features of Bribie Golf Gala Days that players enjoy is that they get to play with a range of partners throughout the day.
The Steve Jones Cup
Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and 22, Bribie hosted the Queensland State Association Team and 6 other players who competed in the Steve Jones Cup. This event is the final competition for the State Team before they head to Perth for the Croquet Australia's National Men's and Women's Singles events and the Eire Cup.
It was great to see the camaraderie between all the state teams, and we wish them success in Perth in April!
The competition was exceedingly tight. The 16 players played a total of 7 games divided into 2 blocks. At the end of the 6th Game on Sunday any 3 of the top players in each block could have gone into the final — the games won and net hoops achieved was extremely close. Thus, game 7 on Sunday afternoon was crucial!
Shane Davis from Windsor club came out on top of the Blue Block, with Dave Luxmoore from Burleigh Heads / Palm Beach Club winning the Red Block.
The final between these two players was an excellent demonstration of controlled ball movement around the court. It really was like watching 'snooker on grass'! Several hoops were made by each player after 'time was called' and at that stage either player still could have won. In the end, Dave unfortunately hit his ball which subsequently went out of the court. This then allowed Shane Davis to finish the game off, and he finally pegged his red ball out.
Final Result: Shane Davis 23 hoops, Dave Luxmoore 21 hoops.
A close and exciting final game!
