On the competitive front, congratulations go to Dave Luxmoore, who finished second at the Bribie Island Association Croquet Tournament over the weekend. Dave progressed confidently through a strong field, with two blocks of eight players, and he and Shane Davis of Windsor Croquet Club each topped their respective blocks to meet in the final. What followed was a close and thoroughly absorbing contest, decided by just two hoops. Shane ultimately secured the win after the bell, needing a long roquet, eleven hoops and a ball pegged out — a sequence that kept spectators engaged right to the end. Dave's performance was impressive throughout and continues his consistent presence at the pointy end of tournament play.

BHPB also enjoyed success further afield, with President Ann Rawding winning the Plate event at the NSW Women's Golf Croquet Tournament. It's always a pleasure to see BHPB colours represented so well interstate, and even better when silverware follows the long trip home!

Bunnings BBQ

Back at home, the Club also enjoyed a very successful Bunnings BBQ fundraiser. Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers — who managed grills, queues and the occasional wind-blown napkin with equal skill. The event was a great success, raising valuable funds while providing plenty of opportunities for friendly conversation between sausages served. It proved once again that while Croquet is our game, community is our strength.

Division 2 Pennants

Division 2 Pennants were hosted at Palm Beach on 20th March, with Beth and Dot keeping a watchful (and well-respected) eye on proceedings in their role as referees. On court, Joy and Ross faced off against Greg and Julie, while Ted and Brian took on visitors from Coolangatta. Competitive matches and good sportsmanship prevailed throughout, making for an enjoyable day of pennants Croquet on home lawns. Looking forward to the next round of Pennants matches to come!

Beth at the Open Women's Singles

At the end of March, Beth tested the high-intensity field at the Open Women's Singles at Wynnum. Beth's skill and endurance was awe-inspiring. She beat three of State players and one former State player in the space of two days. Meanwhile, Chris kept an eye on the competitors, braving the heat to help out as a referee. While Beth did not claim a trophy this time, she was justifiably proud of her performance. Well done Beth!

Lastly, as the year gathers momentum, we are reminded that the Club's vitality lies in its people: those we remember with gratitude, those who compete with determination, and those who quietly turn up to help — sausage tongs in hand. Here's to another quarter of hoops well run, friendships strengthened and the occasional cheerful celebration — on and off the court.

Vale — Betty Adam

Betty Adam celebrated her centenary on 23 October 2022.

We end on a sombre note. We regret to announce the passing of long-serving member and former President (2001–2004), Mrs Betty Adam, who passed away peacefully on 8 February after a short illness.

Betty was a formidable Association Croquet player and a highly respected instructor of the code. Many of our newer AC players will remember her patience, precision and unmistakable enthusiasm on the court, and the recent growth in AC participation at the Club owes much to her mentoring and encouragement.

Betty celebrated her centenary on 23 October 2022, surrounded by family and friends. She will be remembered not only for her skill and leadership and encouragement of new players. Our thoughts are with her family and friends.
