As Summer has slipped away, the Byron Bay Croquet Club has welcomed back those players who have holidayed in various locations in Australia and abroad.
Pennants Season
After a faultless season in the Northern Rivers Croquet Association last year the Club has commenced the 2026 pennant campaign with a loss, a draw and two wins from 4 out of 10 matches to be played weekly until May.
Well aware that our best performers last season lowered their handicap to the point that they surpassed their handicap limit, Coach Max conducts weekly training sessions for 12 contenders who are ready if needed, to fill vacancies this season.
Queensland Event Success
Prior to the start of the pennants a number of our members competed in Queensland events. Werner Borkhardt and Dennise Simmons combined to win the George Hartman Metropolitan GC Challenge Tier 1 Doubles in early February. They followed up to claim the Tier A Doubles Title at the Darling Downs GC Championship. Werner also finished as runner-up in the Tier A Singles Event.
Also playing in Toowoomba were Helen McKay and Stuart Elliott. Helen was successful winning the Tier C Singles event.
Dennise followed up her Queensland successes, competing at the New South Wales GC Open Singles Championships in Tempe (Sydney).
Development Squad
David Scott (Cherry Street and Byron Bay associate member) has organised a monthly Northern Rivers Golf Croquet Development Squad at Byron Bay. The squad focuses on players who are credibly aiming for State Squad or State Team selection, or senior players available to encourage competition, mentor or coach the squad.
Stuart Elliot has organised a Level 1 and 2 practice session on Tuesday morning before Max's pennant coaching practice.
Our Club plays Golf Croquet on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday afternoons. Ricochet is played on Wednesday mornings and Saturday afternoon.
